| 内容記述 | Perhaps the one thing which has caused me more trouble than any other when translating Sôseki is the fact that he very often varies his style. In Botchan, for instance, the protagonist says early on in the book that he does not have a very extensive vocabulary. However, at times words are used in this book which one would not expect the hero to know. In short, Sôseki is not always consistant. Sometimes it is Botchan talking, but sometimes it is obviously Sôseki-sensei to whom we are listening. The problem for the translator is whether to render this difference faithfully, or to make the whole of the language consistant. Differences in style are particularly marked in Kusa Makura. There are, for example, haibun, haiku, kanshi, normal literary Japanese, colloquial language, dialect and English poetry. Moreover, some of the Chinese poetry is quoted and some is original. In a word, with Sôseki, it is not so much what he says which is difficult to translate, but the way in which he says it. |
