| 内容記述 | Many times since childhood, I have heard my mother speak about my grandfather Sōseki. Since her remarks always concluded with expressions of fear of her father, my image of Sōseki while I was growing up was a frightening one. In later years, as I beCáme more familiar with his work, however, I found him to be a tragically lonely figure. This fact was particularly evident in Kōjin ,in which he graphically described himself psychologically. Kōjin was written when Sōseki was seriously afflicted with both neurotic disorders and stomach ulcers. Many of the everyday happenings at home that were related to me by my mother often appear in this work. It is a known fact that Sōseki attracted a great many students who revered and loved him. One wonders which Sōseki is the true Sōseki-the frightening family man, the lonely human being, or the adored teacher with high ideals. Judging from what I personally heard from my mother and other relatives, and from reading his writings and those of his students, I feel that the true Sōseki was a complex man who combines all three. | |||||
