| 内容記述 | From his early years, Tanizaki Junichiro read widely in the literature of the Heian period and his late work Shosho Shigemoto no Haha （"Captain Shigemoto's Mother") may be described as the fruition of his lifelong interest in the classics. This novel includes quotations and transcriptions in modern Japanese from numerous classical works, creating a work largely in the Heian style. It is nevertheless an extremely "Tanizakian" novel. In my presentation, I will attempt to reveal the process whereby the author effectively utilizes the Heian period materials. By a detailed comparison of various passages from the novel with their original sources (mainly from Konjaku Monogatari) and reference to other works by Tanizaki, I hope to elucidate the author's use of his materials regarding names, psychological descriptions of characters and the relationships between them, and to illustrate Tanizaki's process of assimilation. |
