| 内容記述 | Shin Kokuô (The new king), a drama of the new Shinpa school of theater, was first performed on October 1, 1910, by the company of KAWAKAMI Otojirô, at Teikokuza in Osaka. On the surface, the play appears to be little more than a common tragic melodrama which tells the love story of a prince who is studying abroad and his maidservant. Upon closer examination, however, it reflects a strong awareness of the contemporary political climate of the two countries, Japan and Korea. Although there are written records pertaining to the performance of this play, the work itself remains largely unknown. In this study, then, I want to discuss this story in terms of information I found at the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum at Waseda University, and examine the image of Korea that is found in the play. Shin Kokuô can be considered a translation of Alt Heidelberg, by the German writer Wilhelm Meyer-Förster (1862-1934). Thus, as a basis for analysis, I will attempt a comparison of these two works. After making use of information from certain contemporary newspaper and magazine articles in order to trace the process of translation, I will examine the similarities and differences between these two works, and thus carry out the above objective. |
