| 内容記述 | 琉球列島米国民政府（United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands：USCAR）は、1950 年12 月から1972 年5 月まで沖縄を統治していた米陸軍省の地域管理部隊である。USCAR が作成・収受した文書、通称USCAR 文書は、1998 年度より沖縄県公文書館にて公開されており、その分量は約350 万ページにも及ぶ。USCAR 文書は、米国立公文書館より収集されたものである。なぜ、約350 万ページもの沖縄統治に関する米国の公文書が残されていたのだろうか。本稿は、戦後沖縄においてがどのように記録管理をおこなっていたのか、そして1972 年の沖縄返還にともないどのように記録が「処分」されたのか考察することを目的とする。 The United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) was an Area Administration Unit of the Department of the Army, which governed the Ryukyu Islands from December 1950 to May 1972. In 1998, those documents created and collected by USCAR—the so-called USCAR Records—were made available for public viewing by the Okinawan Prefectural Archives. The USCAR Records, which amount to a staggering 3.5 million pages, were initially collected by the US national Archives. Why such a huge collection of documents was preserved in the first place? This paper explores ways in which records were managed in post-war Okinawa, as well as how these records were dealt with in 1972, when Okinawa was officially returned to Japan. |
