| 内容記述 | 木口木版は、今日では専ら芸術的な目的のために用いられる版画の技法である。しかし、明治二〇年代には、海外からもたらされた図像を複製し、拡散する実用的なメディアとしての一面を持っていた。本稿では、博文館の少年雑誌に掲載された木口木版挿絵を中心に、これらの図版が西洋の雑誌から模刻されたものであることを指摘する。はじめに、木口木版が少年雑誌のヴィジュアル面を支えた時期、および代表的な木口木版工房である生巧館と少年雑誌との関わりについて論じる。次に、博文館少年雑誌の科学欄に掲載された図版を中心に検討し、これらがアメリカの科学雑誌からの転載であることを指摘する。また、同じく博文館少年雑誌に掲載されたポンチ絵を取り上げ、これらがドイツの風刺雑誌からの転載であることを指摘する。 Wood engravings are currently employed primarily as a means of artistic expression. However, in the last two decades of the nineteenth century, these engravings served as a crucial medium in the reproduction and promulgation of images imported from abroad. In this article, I point out the fact that the wood engraving published in children's magazines, published by Hakubunkan, were, in fact, copies of those found in western magazines. First, I discuss that period in the history of children's magazines in which wood engraving came to dominate the visual aspect of the magazine. This is followed by an examination of the relationship between the magazine and Seikōkan, the most noteworthy producer of wood engravings at the time. Then, I show how the wood engravings found in the science column of children's magazines were reproductions of images taken from scientific magazines imported from America. I do the same for those engravings appearing in the cartoon section, showing how these, likewise, were reproductions of images taken from satirical magazines imported from Germany. |
