内容記述 | Japan accomplished her modernization at a breakneck speed by absorbing things of the West -science, technology, education, law, etc. However, when it comes to dealing with Western people, it is a different matter altogether. Japan has shown toward hakujin or white people extremes of reactions ranging from abhorrence to fascination. japan's geographic insularity and essentially homogeneous population have much to do with her inability to look at Westerners as real people. Historical events such as the Tokugawa isolation policy and World WarⅡmay also have contributed to it. In the present Japan where there are 10,000 Japanese to every Westerner there exists a milieu that allows room for fantasized images of hakujin. The images often have less to do with the reality of Westenrners than with the Japanese emotions varying from fears of to aspirations to be like the West. It is my belief that these images are best expressed in both highbrow and popular fiction. | |||||
