| 内容記述 | Kōda Rohan occupies a unique place in the history of modern (kindai) Japanese literature. In an age when many writers were influenced by Western culture, Rohan created a literature which both thematically and stylistically has its roots in the Eastern tradition. However, despite this, it must not be overlooked that Rohan entertained and enormous interest in the West. His very early novel, Ro dan-dan, published Meiji 22 (1989), is cosmopolitan in scope, being set in New York City. In Fūryū butsu, too, which was published in the same year, one can detect a keen awareness of the West. Rohan's vision of the West, as presented in these works, is very unique. Its underlying elements will be ascertained through analysis of the pōet Tairakku in Ro dan-dan. It will also be shown that Rohan's experiences in Hokkaido, which amounted to an overseas sojourn of a very singular kind, can in fact be compared to a "Westerm experience，" and Yuki fun-pun is analysed according to this interpretation. Lastly, it will be shown through detailed analysis of Fūryū butsu that the accounts of the Mormon Church in this work are part of the story's thematic structure. |
